Student Assistant Application--$500 Summer Internship

The Student Assistant summer internship is an opportunity for two middle school students, one from Graham and one from Crittenden.   To apply you must currently be in 8 th grade and be 14 years old by July 7, 2008, and have a work permit (if you do not have a work permit, you can go to your school office and ask for one to fill out).   This application is due in your school's main office by April 30, 2008.

The Student Assistant summer internship involves working with teachers at the Krause Center for Innovation (KCI) at Foothill College.   At KCI, the staff creates projects for teachers/students that use technology to meet educational curriculum standards.   As a Student Assistant Intern, you will have the opportunity to participate in various activities such as helping teachers use resources and tools on the internet, work with multimedia applications, create websites, and develop activities for the teachers' classrooms.   You will also assist in basic office duties related to supplies, printing and distributing materials, recording activities of the institute through videos and photos and other tasks that arise. The program begins on Monday, July 7, 2008 and ends Friday, July 25, 2008.   Your stipend for the three-week work period is $500.   You must be available the entire three-week period.   The work days are Monday thru Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM.

Applicants should be familiar with computers, cameras, camcorders, cell phones, and iPods. Selected students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from KCI while they are working. Foothill is on the city bus route.   Members of the Krause Center, Mesa de la Comunidad, GMS and CMS staff will review applications.   The selection committee will interview the top applicants.   Applications are available in the office.

Services for our Gifted and Talented Students

Graham has a proud history of meeting the needs of all our students, including our best and brightest students. Offerings have included advanced academic opportunities (like Geometry), high-level performing arts and athletic activities and student leadership roles. GMS-TV and Robotics Competition activities have been available outside of the school day for several years. Student Council, Literary Magazine, Yearbook and the recently completed ArtsLab are other examples.

We are in the process of implementing additional services to better meet the needs of our Gifted and Talented students. Partnering with Crittenden Middle School, we intend to offer a series of field trips and one-day activities, such as visits to the Tech Museum.

Beginning today, November 28, we are instituting a weekly Public Speaking Academy before school on our late start day. Earlier this month we instituted a Book Discussion Club to give students a chance to share their thoughts about Mountain View Reads selection for 2007: "When the Elephants Dance". Our Chess Club meets every Friday after school, receiving powerful coaching from our parent volunteer, Michael Haspert.

I believe the most significant service we could provide to our Gifted students would be to increase the Differentiation of Instruction they receive in all classes during the school day. We are fortunate that the district is sponsoring two Differentiating Instruction workshops this year. One began this Tuesday, November 27, and continues over 2 other evenings. I have signed up and encouraged my staff to do so. The second workshop consists of two Saturday sessions beginning in January.

We held our GMS GATE meeting yesterday evening (GATE parents received a recorded phone invitation

from me). We heard a report from our District GATE Committee representatives (parent Laura Blakely,

teachers Anel Albertao and Emma Spencer) and discussed our plans for the year. We listened to ideas our parents brought to share.

We expect to hold another parent meeting after the Winter Holiday. We will report to you in the Bear Tracks and on our website about new services and opportunities for our GATE students
